ATI helps promising innovators from IMPEL+ take their next step in the private sector pipeline

IMPEL+ (Incubating Market-Propelled Entrepreneurial-Mindset at the Labs and Beyond) is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Office (BTO), and implemented by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab).

The vision of IMPEL+ is to integrate market-oriented skill sets with advanced scientific thinking of National Lab scientists, academics, researchers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses. The goal is to focus early stage building innovations and programs on market gaps, and catalyze them towards public and private sector engagement and impact.

ATI is a commercial partner for IMPEL+, with two of our programs being a great next step in the private sector pipeline for some of the most promising innovators who participate in the IMPEL+ program. We are excited to share the companies that were selected to participate in both EarthX and SEAL below.

EarthX

The 2021 EarthX E-Capital Summit was held April 27-30th and ATI once again supported EarthX in putting together the Summit, which included a 2-day conference with leading speakers/panelists in the sustainability/climate and investing fields, the ATI E-Capital Connection (E-Cap Connection), and the second year of the EarthX Climate Tech Prize (CTP) competition. For 2021, ATI partnered with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) and IMPEL+ to mentor and shortlist IMPEL+ candidates in the building environment space for the CTP and E-Cap Connection.

The ATI E-Capital Connection is a highly curated private event that was held on April 30th where investors and start-ups were matched in one-on-one meetings. Over 100 companies applied to participate in the summit. From that initial pool of applicants more than 60 companies and 50+ investors were chosen to participate in the E-Cap Connection where nearly 400 meetings were scheduled! 8 IMPEL+ innovators were selected to participate in E-Cap Connection: BETTER, CBC Wind, Varea, WeavAir, COI Energy, Flower Turbines, GS Research and Smart Resource Lab.

SEAL

Summer Entrepreneur Acceleration and Launch (SEAL) is UT Austin’s selective summer accelerator that picks the most promising emerging startups across campus and helps them confront their next market-driven milestone. At the end of the IMPEL+ program, three promising companies that show a true understanding of sustainability were chosen for the 2021 SEAL cohort: Energy Shrink, R2M2, and LovEnergy.

Over the next nine weeks, this cohort will be going through a series of workshops and working with mentors to build their startup. The program ends with a Decision Day, where based on individual research and expert feedback, teams determine whether their venture can survive the real world and make a go or no-go decision.
