UT’s Global Commercialization Group Launching New Program in Kuwait

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

The University of Texas at Austin – IC²  Institute’s Global Commercialization Group (GCG) with National Technology Enterprises Company (NTEC) in Kuwait are jointly deploying and developing the Global Bridge Initiative (GBI) in Kuwait City. The project is a 4-year program funded through various Kuwaiti Government Institutions and companies with offset obligations in the country. The first year will be partially funded by the  Thales Group of France. The focus of the first year is to accelerate the development of Kuwait’s knowledge economy and establish a high tech center at NTEC that will be the catalyst for both domestic and regional wealth creation.

The key to regional prosperity is the strategic combination of technology, entrepreneurship, and education. The proposed program will promote new venture creation and will use technology commercialization and entrepreneurship as the engine for economic growth. Kuwait’s  anticipated recognition as a high technology innovation  hub and a Gulf Region business gateway depends on an investment in human and business capital that will provide the necessary infrastructure and talent to entice investment.

GBI utilizes a disciplined, accountable methodology to deliver measurable objectives. These include:

1. Identification of Kuwaiti innovation with global commercial potential

2. Transfer of Global & U.S. technologies into Kuwait/MENA region for the formation of new enterprises

3. Identification of Kuwaiti entrepreneurs to lead new businesses based on foreign technology

4. Training of Kuwaiti entrepreneurs for global commercialization of technology

5. Establishment of three technology commercialization centers in key sectors: Energy, Biotechnology and Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

6. Connections to international capital and know-how networks

7. Generation of business agreements between foreign and GBI Program participants that can lead to future international business and technology transfer agreements

8. Knowledge transfer of technology commercialization methodologies and entrepreneurship education to local partners. This will bring sustainability to the region beyond the duration of the programThese objectives will in turn increase opportunities for technology-based businesses to thrive in Kuwait, be competitive in global markets and attract investments. The GBI program is unique because it combines the transfer of expertise related to the growth and development allowing for selfsustainability as well as proactive business development in international markets.

The official launch date of the Global Bridge Initiative is scheduled for January 26, 2011 in Kuwait City.

ATI Director Contributes to WSJ – “In Race to Market, It Pays to be a Latecomer”

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

The Wall Street Journal’s Small Business editor and reporter Sarah Needleman called on ATI director Isaac Barchas for a Thursday morning piece trumpeting the wisdom of those who come (to market) later.

Paraphrasing, she wrote that while the pioneers have earliest access to the market, they also shoulder the task of not only defining the market, but pleasing it when, having never seen anything like it, customers’ own perceived risk is at its highest. The latecomers have the privilege of learning from the trailblazers’ folly.

Barchas contributed his trademark wisdom, likening the phenomena to the front lines of a battlefield.

Attempting to make history can backfire on a young company, adds Mr. Barchas. “A colloquial way of looking at this is being the first soldier on the lip of the trench. It’s a glorious and noble position, but it’s also dangerous.”

A shortened version of the article ran in the Marketplace section of Thursday’s WSJ print edition.

Proven Team Behind XERIS Pharmaceuticals Finds Game-Changing Counsel in ATI Directors

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

Austin, TX (PRWEB) December 21, 2010 – The Austin Technology Incubator (ATI), a not-for-profit arm of The University of Texas at Austin, announced today that XERIS Pharmaceuticals, Inc., joined as a member company of the ATI-Bioscience Incubator.

XERIS develops patient-friendly bio-pharmaceuticals with its disruptive combination platform that includes formulation and a delivery device. The company’s products are ultra-low-volume, injectable bio-pharmaceuticals packaged in an auto-injector pen that patients and their caregivers can use at home or work. The solution dramatically simplifyies administration, cuts costs and improves overall patient comfort and compliance.

Having considered relocation since the fall of 2009, the XERIS team began talks with ATI’s Executive Director, Isaac Barchas, and its Bioscience Director, Cindy WalkerPeach, Ph.D., early this year when Xeris CEO John Kinzell, Ph.D., was on his first site diligence visit to Austin.  After considering North Carolina, Colorado, Arizona and San Antonio and Austin, Texas, the team chose Texas because of its life-science cluster and business-friendly tax and regulatory climate. The team picked Austin specifically for its entrepreneurial culture, as reflected through the ATI.

“With its vibrant entrepreneurial biotech ecosystem, Austin was a logical place to relocate Xeris,” said Yash Sabharwal, COO. “Both Dr. Kinzell and I were extremely impressed with Dr. WalkerPeach and Isaac Barchas, specifically, and ATI in general. I have seen a lot of incubator efforts, but Dr. WalkerPeach’s direct experience with biotech startups, business development experience, her energy and her accessibility are all evidence that there is tremendous differentiation with the ATI model.”

The immediate engagement of the ATI directors, providing XERIS time and direction on commercial activities was well as  board development, were primary selling points for coming on board, said Sabharwal. The ATI’s track record of connecting Central-Texas companies to investor capital along with its renowned intern program to assist with legal and marketing work were also high on the team’s reasons to join.

“The XERIS team is a group of experienced entrepreneurs with an exciting technology,” said Dr. WalkerPeach. “The team’s plan to expand its initial product offering from addressing severe hypoglycemia in diabetics to an FDA-approved delivery platform that can serve multiple drug categories represents a dramatic paradigm shift in current drug delivery technology.”

About the Austin Technology Incubator

The Austin Technology Incubator is a nonprofit unit of The University of Texas at Austin that harnesses business, government and academic resources to provide strategic counsel, operational guidance and infrastructure support to its member companies to help them transition from early stage ventures to successful technology businesses.  Since its founding in 1989, ATI has worked with over 200 companies, helping them raise close to $750 million in investor capital.  ATI is a key program of the IC2 Institute at The University of Texas at Austin.  For more information, visit www.ati.utexas.edu

About XERIS

Xeris is an early-stage bio-pharmaceutical company developing new technologies for the formulation and delivery of bio-pharmaceuticals. Bio-pharmaceuticals are the fastest growing category of therapeutics and are forecasted to be 6 of the top 10 drugs by 2014. The current paradigm of delivery requires nearly all of these drugs to be administered by injection or infusion, often in a clinical setting, decreasing compliance, increasing cost and providing a terrible patient experience. Xeris aspires to change this paradigm by developing ultra-low volume, ready-to-use bio-pharmaceuticals delivered through patient-friendly injectable devices, many of which would be self-administered in the comfort of the patient’s home. Products built on Xeris’ technologies would simplify administration and ease the pain of injections, improving the experience for hundreds of millions of patients.
